A young blind musician who was born in 1930 in Jacksonville, FL was destined to make his own music in the business. Although he was talented as a piano musician, he was unable to break through because he sounded too much like the people he was imitating. There was already a Charles Brown and a Nat King Cole. The world didn’t need another one of those.
What it would eventually get would be a Ray Charles.
Ray mixed up funk, blues, soul and gospel to eventually get something called Rhythm and Blues and the Ray Charles sound.
A young musician who was born in 1936 in Lubbock, TX was destined to make his own music in the business. Although he was talented as a guitar musician, he was unable to break through because he sounded too much like music the older generation was terrified of hearing. After all there was already Elvis Presley breaking the rules and “Blackboard Jungle” showing how the Glenn Ford teacher character was getting intimidated in high school by hooligans who listened to “Rock Around The Clock”. The world didn’t need more of that kind of craziness.
What it would eventually get would be a Buddy Holly.
Buddy combined rock, blues and country to help pioneer the Rockabilly sound and would eventually embody such a movement that when his plane crashed killing him, it would forever be known as “the day the music died.” The point is, what are you doing today in your business that is amazingly unique or incredibly innovative?
Does the world (or market) need another one of you? How can you spin it?
What can you do today in your market or field that is dramatically different?
If everyone else in your category is Blockbuster, how can you be Netflix?
