The Basics of the Law of Attraction

 

There are laws that govern our success in business and in life. We must observe the power of these laws and use them to help propel us forward and help us get what we want.

Today, I am going to focus on The Law of Attraction. This law says that you are a living magnet and you attract into your life the people, situations, and circumstances that are in harmony with your dominant thoughts.

This law has been around for centuries and can be found in writings as old as 5,000 years ago in the archives of ancient Egyptian archeological finds. It is so powerful that it affects everything you say, do and feel and is primarily based on your thinking processes. This law can be thought of or described as some kind of “magic law,” as though you are “magically creating” these things into your life. The fact is, it isn’t some kind of magic at all, and through advanced neuroscience, we can understand how this law works, many times to perfection once we understand its principles and power.

I’m sure you have experienced that sensation which occurs when you have been thinking of someone you haven’t seen or thought about in a long time and then suddenly, you run into them somewhere or they call or someone else mentions them to you. This is the law of attraction at work. To understand how to harness the power of the law of attraction, I need to explain to you, in at least simple terms, how the RAS works in your brain.

The Reticular Activation System is a portal in your brain through which almost all information enters your thinking. Smells are an exception; they actually go straight into the emotional area of your brain. Your RAS filters the incoming information and affects what you pay attention to, how interested you are and what is going to get access to your entire brain functions. Your RAS responds to the sound of your name, anything that might threaten your survival and any information you need right now. The RAS also responds to anything new or different, for instance, my RAS is highly attuned to how I left my office the day before and when I come back to it the next day. If anything is moved, changed or is different, my RAS spots that difference immediately when I enter.

This also works with people. My RAS is tuned to people’s behavior patterns and when those patterns change, I notice right away. I have been impeccable when it comes to predicting employee’s resignations or mood changes. Anything attributive to a change in behavior sticks out to me like an orange egg laying in a pile of one hundred white eggs. Anything out of the ordinary can be picked up on by your RAS. Learning to pay attention to the signals your RAS is sending you is also a learned skill. Most of the time, people just shake it off as a coincidence or weirdness instead of learning to trust those signals to lead them somewhere or to a possible idea or conclusion.

Another example I can share with you is that two years ago I wanted to purchase a blue Chevy pick-up truck for myself. I began to start to try to notice any blue pick-up trucks in my town on the road and I started driving around car dealers looking for a blue pick-up truck I liked. Do you know how many blue pick-ups I found? None. Zero. Not even passing by on the road. Later, a car dealer found one for me in Chicago and sent pictures for my approval. I approved the vehicle to have it transported to me for my purchase. Once I started driving that blue pick-up truck around my town and my RAS relaxed, you know how many blue trucks I saw? More than 10 that next week! Suddenly, they were everywhere! Upon reflection, if I had posted a picture of the blue truck I wanted in my office, at home and in several places where my RAS could process it, I would have spotted more blue pick-ups a lot sooner!

This is how the law of attraction works.

What is amazing to me is how many things people think about, say and rehearse that they don’t want in their lives. Every day they are putting their RAS to work to push this information through their brain processes so they can notice opportunities to have things in their lives they don’t really even want! When you look at it this way, the law of attraction doesn’t seem quite as mystical. Focus on bad things and you invite bad things into your life more strongly. Focus on good things and your goals and they will come to you because your brain is filtering information to guide you into them.

With this in mind, we need to continually remind ourselves and refocus our brain on what matters and what doesn’t. If you don’t want a pet turtle, then don’t set your intent on getting one and your RAS won’t help you identify and locate one. If you do want a pet turtle, well then…you now know what to do to find one or attract one into your life.
